Construction: Applying Design Patterns in My Code

Design patterns have been a crucial part of my development as a software engineer. Design patterns have allowed me to become a more efficient and effective software engineer by providing me with a set of best practices that I can use to solve common problems in software design. The reusable solutions that design patterns offer have helped me become a more fluent and thoughtful software engineer, as I am able to apply these solutions to different problems in different contexts.

Software Architecture: The Three Types of Design Patterns

‘Design Patterns’ is an umbrella term that encompasses three different types of design patterns: creational, structural, and behavioral. Creational design patterns focus on object mechanisms, providing flexibility in creating objects. Structural design patterns are concerned with the composition of classes and objects. Behavioral design patterns are concerned with the communication between objects and how they collaborate to achieve larger, complex tasks.

Abstract Factory Pattern

The Abstract Factory pattern is a creational design pattern that provides an interface to create families of related or dependent objects without specifying their concrete classes. These blueprints, called abstract factories, have methods to create these related objects, but they don’t tell you the exact type of each object. Instead, different versions of these blueprints make different groups of things that work together. Clients use the abstract factory to create product objects, receiving instances of these products without being aware of the specific classes involved. This pattern promotes flexibility by allowing the interchangeability of entire families of products while ensuring their compatibility within the system’s architecture.

Composite Pattern

The Composite pattern is a structural design pattern that lets you organize objects into a tree-like structure. It allows clients to treat individual objects and compositions of objects in a consistent manner by using the same set of rules. The pattern consists of two main components: the “Component,” which serves as the set of rules that all objects within the structure must follow, and the “Composite,” which represents a group of components that can be treated as a single object. This pattern enables the construction of complex structures while providing a consistent way to work with individual components and composites, simplifying the client’s code and interactions. Clients can perform operations on both individual elements and entire compositions without needing to distinguish between them.

Command Pattern

The Command pattern is a behavioral design pattern that encapsulates a request as an object, allowing for parameterization of clients with requests, handlers, and operations. It separates the sender of a request from the object that performs the action, enabling operation request to be sent without knowing the receiver’s identity. This pattern promotes extensibility by allowing new commands to be added without modifying existing client code, enhancing flexibility and maintainability in complex systems. Additionally, it enables grouping several actions together, where a series of commands can be executed or undone as a single unit.

The Application of Design Patterns in Industry

Design patterns are also incredibly valuable in industry for several reasons. For instance, design patterns promote standardization and consistency across projects and teams. Consistency in codebases makes it easier for new team members to understand the codebase and contribute to the project. Design patterns also promote code reuse, which is a crucial aspect of software development. Code reuse allows software engineers to save time and effort by repurposing code that has already been written.
